If a century ride is on your calendar for this year, and training for a century is on your mind, then it’s a perfect time to jump into the training series (no charge) put on by the Trek Bicycle Superstores in San Diego. Check out the video from the 2010 series to get a feel for the group.

Join this 100 mile ride training program for all 17 weeks, or ride with the group for a week or two. Either way, it’s a great way for riders at any level to participate in a free program that covers some of San Diego’s best and most-traveled routes.
Experienced riders mentor 4 ride levels every week and make sure no one is left behind. Four pace groups that range from 12 mph to 20mph provide a slot for everyone who wants to join. Each of the longer rides is designed with stops at convenience stores to rehydrate and refuel. The Trek team is also excellent about printing route slips every week, and the GPS tracks are perfectly laid out for those wanting to upload the course maps to Garmin devices and other GPS tools.
Another element that one can’t neglect for a century ride is keeping up your solo training during the week. Be sure to build your endurance during the week with your own time on the bike, spin classes, stationary cycling or cycling machines at the gym.
If some coaching and training support will help then check out the partner coaches for the San Diego Century: John Howard and Darryl MacKenzie.
