Adam wrote:  I was lucky enough to have the time to ride the first stage of the Tour De California this past saturday. Beautiful day for a ride, cool and cloudy at first, but the sun started to come out just as I got up the hill to Ramona. Stopped in lovely Santa Isabel for a piece of pie (I have type 2 diabetes so can only have those types of dessert on long rides). After a delicious piece, I went up the Mesa Grande grade, nice climb up, but the downhill to lake henshaw is a spectacular tree covered serpentine descent wheee! The big challenge was next up palomars east grade, 11 miles of straight up hill, long and hard but rewarding because you have earn your downhills. 14 miles and 4800 of feet of descent on switchbacks, just glorious! But that all ends as you look up the ominous climb that is Cole grade. By then it had gotten abit warmer and the old legs were feeling the distance (about 80+ miles) I was slow but steady. Now all I had was a pleasant ride thru Valley Center back to Escondido and home.

I rode 204 miles in the Hemet Double Century. It was the first time I’ve done a ride of that distance in one day. What an experience! It makes the Centuries seem so much easier now:) Can’t wait for San Diego!!!

One of the best rides you can do are those to help other people and causes. Last saturday I was a participant in the Tour De Cure here in San Diego. What a wonderful ride! I am a newly diagnosed Type 2 Diabetic, so the cause was near a dear to my heart. We started at torrey pines highschool and dropped down into the Del Mar and start the slow climb up thru Rancho Santa Fe towards San Elijo hills. After a quick rest stop it was on the best part of the ride, a nice rolling trek thru Elfin Forrest, probably one of the nicest rides in north county. A quick stopped in Escondido at Gloria Dei church, and on to the major climbs in the north county. Jesmond Dean was nice a shaded, but it started to get a bit warm as we start up Circle R dr. to west Lilac, but you have to earn your downhills. From there on it was basically downhill all the way thru bonsal to the coast. A little headwind going down the San luis Rey trail, that nicely turned into a tailwind down the coast to back towards torrey pines. But the kicker is that after 98.5 miles you still had to climb 300 ft at the end to get to the finnish. A good cause, a good bike ride.
